This Is My October '19 Playlist
1. I discovered this song at the late, great David Mancuso’s elusive underground NY loft party, which I was fortunate enough to attend. What an amazing night, filled with great energy & mind-blowing (vinyl only) records!
2. A classic song, smooth like honey, that’s been sampled by many like Naughty By Nature, Notorious B.I.G. and even Backstreet Boys. It’s good to go back to the originals.
3. Lana Del Rey covered this from Sublime. I went through a heavy Sublime phase when I was younger, so this takes me back, and is a beautiful version.
4. This song just screams vacation. Period.
5. Groovy bass-line with a catchy hook featuring Damon Albarn of Gorillaz (and Blur). So good.
6. This is what Disco dreams are made of. It is virtually impossible to not like this song. Also, you may recognize it as the sample in Jamie xx’s track “Loud Places.”
7. Bronski Beat is an English synth-pop trio from the 80s. I love Jimmy Somerville’s haunting vocals on this track, which is about a gay teenager who leaves his family and flees his hometown.
8. With a powerful synth hook and lyrics like “It takes years to build up something that you try, no one's here to lift it up this time,” this song resonates with me on many levels.
9. ÌFÉ, a critically-acclaimed band from my home country Puerto Rico, fuses electronic sound with the tradition of Yoruba music and a touch of dancehall. World renowned DJ and producer Nicola Cruz remixed this song, and was quoted as saying this band is “The future of electronic music.”
10. OBSESSED with this track. It’s the perfect mix of disco, house and synth-pop.
