This Is My November '19 Playlist
1. Kicking off this month’s playlist with a beautiful intro, the aptly named track “Music Is God, My Love…” by Chassol, a Parisian composer who’s worked with several big name artists like Phoenix, Sebastien Tellier and Frank Ocean.
2. I love Bonga’s throaty vocals. His music carries Angolan, Brazilian and Portuguese influences.
3. “I’m not in love” by Kelsey Lu is a dreamy cover of English band 10cc’s 1975 track. I’ll never forget first hearing the original song in one of my favorite movies, The Virgin Suicides.
4. Love this Texas band that makes heavenly shoegaze tracks like this one.
5. SOLANGE. Enough said.
6. Been a long-time fan of Toro y Moi and this track embodies all the reasons why. Chillwave, R&B and just plain groovy.
7. LISTEN TO THIS TRACK IN ITS ENTIRETY. Nigerian-born, now Berlin resident, Wayne Snow’s voice is soulful AF. This song goes through beautiful ups and downs, from a percussion break at 1:22 to the gentle melodic keys of a Rhodes piano throughout.
8. I saw Taylor McFerrin (son of Don’t Worry Be Happy’s Bobby McFerrin) play in a small little jazz bar in Brooklyn back around 2010. He was a one-man-band, looping his beatboxing and several piano beats together to create mind-blowing songs on the spot. I recently came across some of his later work, like this song featuring RYAT’s amazing voice, and am as equally mind-blown.
9. West African rhythms meet experimental electronic music. This song will just move you.
10. Once you get past the first unassumingly quiet 15 seconds of this song, you’re met with pulsing beats, rapping, and then disco music - reminiscent of Blondie’s ‘Rapture.’
