Welcome to my tropicalia-inspired retro-yet-futuristic dream straight from my nonsensical mind…
Did I lose you? I can get carried away with descriptions, packing so much into my sentences (spoken and written) that I catch myself rambling. Does that ever happen to you? And then when I have several things running around in my head I find it hard to communicate or to choose the best words (especially when it comes to politically-charged passionate discussions about current affairs, but that’s a whole ‘nother story). Just think of me as the Mad Hatter, ADHD tendencies and all. Sometimes I say fuck it, let’s have fun and channel all this craziness into what I’m gonna wear today, hence this paradoxical retro-yet-futuristic look that I speak of.
You may have already noticed by now how my style changes on the DAILY, and on this particular day, I wanted to have fun like the bold, carefree, vivacious Miranda Makaroff. I threw together a few items I had in my closet: a colorful vintage jumpsuit, offset with futuristic sunglasses by Karen Walker (the queen-of-chic-meets-eccentric). Let me get to these light up shoes though, the true hero of this post…These “Hologram LED Light Sneakers” by a friend’s (now defunct) brand, Shop Vase, are the life of any party. Everyone I walk past does a double-take…Must be the shoes. *Cue hip hop legends Lords Of The Underground’s line, “It’s the shoes. The SHOES?! It’s GOTTA be the shoes.” (Listen to the first 40 seconds of the song “Chief Rocka” here to see what i mean.)
So as I moon-walk my way past pastel-color buildings, Yesi and I come across this gem of a place, Flamingo Plaza, built in 1937 as the Flamingo Hotel. Today it’s a condo with eye-catching original fresco paintings that have been amazingly preserved & restored. Thanks to the friendly resident sitting outside who let us in, we were able to access this colorful haven. Although I read that it was build in the 1930s i can’t help but think of Brazil’s artistic movement of the 1960s, Tropicalia. Know what I mean?
