The “mellow yellow” low-down…

Summer may be coming to an end, but I’m loving this vibrant purchase from Zara (despite the recent flack the chain is getting for its fast-fashion ways). Now as far as the color yellow is concerned, there really is nothing mellow about it, am i right? It’s a bright, happy shade often associated with glory and harmony. So where did the phrase “mellow yellow” come from? Flashback to 1966, Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan tops the charts with this groovy hit. Here’s the kicker – the song makes reference to vibrators, yes, vibrators. Donovan confirms this in an interview, “It <the song> is about being cool, laid-back, and also the electrical bananas that were appearing on the scene – which were ladies’ vibrators.”

“They call me mellow yellow…

Electrical banana
Is gonna be a sudden craze
Electrical banana
Is bound to be the very next phase”
